We had a fun time in Children’s Church yesterday. We played lots of games and gave away a pillow case full of candy as we taught on the subject of “Trick or Treat.” I used the story of Jesus’ temptation in the desert as told in Luke 4:1-13 as the foundation of the lesson. The focus of the entire class came down to the conclusion that the devil tried to “trick” Jesus with three different temptations. Jesus though, stuck to His calling using the scriptures as His defense and then later received the ultimate “treat” when He defeated the devil (Colossians 2:15) the next time they met face to face following His death on the cross.
Jesus’ victory meant that “the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us…” (Romans 8:4) Therefore, because of His unselfish actions, we are also able to receive the ultimate “treat” of salvation and its accompanying personal relationship with the Son of God. What a thought! What a blessing! What a “treat!” And it was all accomplished through and because of God’s unfailing love for us!
So, tonight when the kids come a' knocking at your door, think about that ultimate “treat” that Jesus provided for you and joyfully share your “treats” with them through your actions and words of love… and of course through the candy you drop in their sacks!
Have a fun time tonight! Stay tuned and keep asking yourself… “What am I expecting tonight?
