I was sharing with the kids in Children’s Church yesterday about the number of our Bible hero’s who had dramatically changed their focus, confidence and faith. Think about that for a moment. Look at the stuttering Moses, who once thought of himself as a gift to his people, only to run and hide when faced with conflict. Then there’s the mighty prophet Elijah who victoriously faced off against the prophets of Bail, and then took to the hills at the threats of a woman.
In the New Testament we have the big, strong, “act first and think later” fisherman Peter who denied Jesus 3 times when questioned by a servant girl, Paul who went from killing Christians to giving up his life for them, and then there’s John Mark who quit Barnabas and Paul when times got tough, was rejected by Paul and then later became “profitable” to him (as well as to Peter- the book of Mark is actually thought to be Peter’s memoirs on the life of Jesus!) in the ministry (II Timothy 4:11 King James Version).
My point to the kids was that our relationship to Jesus gives us the tools and the power to change the things that we don’t like in us! YES, it takes work, but YES it is possible! Isn’t that reassuring to you? You don’t have to go through life making mistakes, bumbling around, not knowing what to say or do in various situations or even stop a problematic habit. Peter tells us that “Gods divine power has given us everything we need for life and for godliness.” (2 Peter 1:3 Gods Word © - and who would know better about this process than Peter!)
So rejoice with me today! Change is in the air, and I’m not just talking about the autumn winds and rain! Do you need things to be different? Well Jesus has the answers ready and waiting for you to use. Why not fall in line with the time of year and bring an end to those things you’d like to lose and begin developing new talents and personality traits!
Stay tuned and keep asking yourself… “What CHANGES am I expecting TO MAKE today?”
